The Columbus Blue Jackets dismissed Dave King from his head coaching duties on Tuesday. King had been the Blue Jackets’ only coach since the club’s debut in 2000.

Doug MacLean, the team’s general manager and president, will take over coaching duties for the remander of the season.

“One doesn’t enjoy doing this,” MacLean said after practice. “A good person was releaved of his duties.”

King was in the final year of his three-year contract.

“Dave King was a good person,” MacLean said. “This was not a very pleasant task, but unfortunately in pro sports, it’s the coach who usually pays the price.”

The Blue Jackets’ record is 14-20-4-2, the second-worst record in the National Hockey League.
