Sir Edmund Hillary would be proud.
Thousands of Buckeye fans scaled the large hill behind Sun Devil Stadium, called A Mountain, “because it was there.”
“I just wanted to see it,” said Tom Thiry, a 1974 OSU graduate from Parma, Ohio.
Looking up at the hill from street level, one could see a steady stream of scarlet making its way up the hill.
Most braved the concrete path and the stairs leading to the top of the mountain but fewer slipped by the barb-wire fence to see into Sun Devil Stadium.
“I came over here because it was a better view,” Thiry said of taking the less beaten path.
A strategically placed press box kept the climbers from seeing the field, but many posed for pictures in front of the site of the national championship.
“Dad asked me if I wanted to come, and I said ‘Yes,’ ” said Ryan Thiry, a senior in electrical engineering at OSU.
Ryan Thiry not only braved the Mountain but is The Mastermind for Parma Front Yard Wrestling, which takes places in his father’s front yard.
Even as darkness fell, hundreds more of the Buckeye faithful came to the top of the hill to see the site.
“Fantastic view — good thing I didn’t drink too many more beers,” Tom Thiry said. The father predicted the Buckeyes will beat Miami 24-21. His son agreed.
