North campus students will soon compete in Recycle Mania, a competition between eight of the top school recycling programs in the country to see who can collect the most recyclables from residence halls and dining halls in 10 weeks.

Recycle Mania begins Feb. 3 and runs through April 13.

“The main goal of Recycle Mania is to make progress toward increasing awareness of recycling,” says Dan Jaynes, president of Students for Recycling.

In addition to Ohio State, participating schools are Bowling Green, Miami University, Ohio University, Harvard, University of Oregon, Western Michigan University and Washington University in St. Louis. The school that collects the largest amount of recyclables per pound wins. Last year BGSU took the top prize with 48 pounds per student.

“It’s important to show students the benefits of recycling,” said Stacey Renker, the facilities planning and support project manager. There will be containers in the lobbies of all north campus areas for drop-off.

Undergraduate Student Government and Students for Recycling are also trying to get landlords to participate in recycling pick-up for off-campus residents, much like landlords paying for garbage pick-up.

“If you don’t live on campus, but want to get involved in recycling, USG is in the process of getting drop box locations in two places off-campus for students to take their recycling,” said Rick Barga, head of recycling for USG.
