Commencement is approaching, but before students can step on stage and receive a diploma, they must first wade through some paperwork.
The actual process of applying for graduation is not complex, but it varies from college to college at Ohio State. In the College of Engineering, students are required to apply for graduation in the eighth week of the quarter three quarters prior to graduation. This deadline is set early to give graduating students two quarters of priority scheduling preceding commencement. Most colleges ask students apply two quarters before their intended graduation.
“Arts and Sciences certify proposed graduating ASC students. Students simply apply at least one quarter before graduation,” said Beth Ray, assistant dean in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Before requesting a certification of degree, students must have their program approved. This is done by visiting a major counselor who will review courses taken and explain what courses and requirements must be met in order to graduate. The major counselor then approves students’ major programs, and they are then able to apply for the certification of degree.
Students graduating with two majors must go through this process. Some of these students will even be given two separate degrees for their two majors.
“When graduating with two majors within the same college, they will be both on the same diploma, but if a student graduates with a degree in something in the arts and sciences and something in business, that student would be given two separate diplomas on gradation,” said Jason Gould, administrative assistant in the Arts and Sciences College.
Several times through the quarter, OSU confirms that each graduating student is in fact upholding the terms of his or her projected graduation plan. Students who will not be permitted to graduate are notified.
“As long as you pass all of these classes, you graduate. Then we turn you over to the Alumni Association,” Ray said.
The Alumni Association at OSU is one of the most active alumni associations in the nation. Graduating students are sent packets of information concerning the association four weeks before commencement, as well as given a speech at graduation rehearsal as to the benefits of joining.
“There are many benefits to being involved in the Alumni Association. It keeps graduates connected, makes OSU stronger, and offers rewards,” said Chris Vlahos, vice president of Membership and Marketing for the OSU Alumni Association.
The first year is paid for by the association. Members receive magazines and are welcomed to join various OSU clubs and societies. The association takes part in programs, scholarship rewards, legislative voicing and recruitment activities. Members enjoy lodging accomodations, car rental specials and use of the Ohio State golf course, among other things.
“It is a great way everyone can keep in touch with OSU,” Vlahos said.
