Nicky Smolter, the vice-presidential candidate on the Chris Peters presidential ticket, has withdrawn from the USG elections.

Her name will remain on the Peters/Smolter ballot, but if the team wins the elections, she will resign the position.

“I don’t feel together we make the best team,” she said. “We ran a good campaign, but I don’t feel that Chris – even though he has many great qualities – or I are the best people for that job.”

Peters had a different view of her decision to drop out of the race.

“I find it highly unethical and immoral for someone to misrepresent themselves in fund-raising and campaigning,” he said. “My campaign team is working harder than ever to win this election and fight for the principles that my campaign is based on.”

Smolter said it was clear after the presidential debate on Tuesday night that only two teams were capable of winning the race and functioning as the heads of USG.

“This is not for me or meant to be against Chris; this is what is best for students,” Smolter said.

She has since thrown her support behind one of those teams.

Peters said if his team wins the election, he will follow the USG bylaws to fill the vacant vice-presidential seat.

“The issues that our campaign is founded on remain our focus, and we are striving harder than ever to overcome this unfortunate situation,” he said.
