Chimes authorized in Orton Hall

May 20, 1914: Trustees authorize the installation of chimes in Orton Hall. The chimes were a gift from OSU classes of 1906-1914. The chimes were dedicated on June 15, 1915, which was also Alumni Day. Recently, two additional bells were added to the original 12.

Computer science department made

May 22, 1968: The Council on Academic Affairs voted to establish a Department of Computer and Information Science. Previously computing classes were offered as a program in the math department.

Jeese Owens sets long-lasting records

May 25, 1935: OSU’s Jesse Owens broke three world track records and tied another at the Big Ten outdoor championships at Ann Arbor. His records stood for more than two decades.

Building named after antislave legislator

May 19, 1896: The agricultural building is named in honor of Norton S. Townshend. Townshend was the first professor of agriculture at Ohio State. After OSU’s agricultural facilities later moved to West Campus, the psychology department took over Townshend Hall. Before Townshend came to OSU to teach, he was a key Ohio antislavery legislator and fought for the repeal of the Fugitive Slave Act in Ohio.
