Robert Lucky Patterson, 20, was arrested Friday in connection to the April 13 fire at 64 E. 17th Ave. Patterson, who lives in the Columbus area but does not attend Ohio State, was charged with five counts of aggravated murder, three counts of attempted murder and nine counts of aggravated arson. Columbus Police Detective Michael McCann, who has led theinvestigation since the fire, said more charges could follow. The arrest was made after police questioned Patterson in his involvement with the fire. McCann said Patterson set the fire after stealing radios from cars within the area. He said Patterson had no relationship with any of the people in the house. Patterson will appear in court Monday morning for his arraignment. According to police, Patterson has a previous record of small crimes in the Columbus area. The fire, which occurred April 13, took the lives of OSU students Alan Schlessman and Kyle Raulin and Ohio University students Erin Demarco, Andrea Davis and Christine Wilson, and was later classified as arson. “Why he set it? He’ll have to answer that,” McCann said. “All we know is that he set it. He has expressed remorse that five people died.” McCann also expressed his thanks to the FBI and Crime-Stoppers, who he said were instrumental in Patterson’s arrest. McCann said police received three direct tips involving Patterson through Crime-Stoppers. “Our crime stoppers tip is what led us to this arrest,” McCannsaid. “When tips come in you have to assume that each one is a valid tip.” McCann said Patterson’s name came up as a suspect three days after the fire was classified as arson. Police said Patterson cooperated and he made statements implicating himself in the fire. “We are most grateful for the hard work and dedication of the fireinvestigators from the Columbus Division of Police and other law enforcement agencies as an arrest is made in the tragic arson fire that claimed the lives of five young people last April,” Ohio State President Karen A. Holbrook said in a statement about Patterson’s arrest. Fourteen students were still in the house at the time of the fire, with six escaping, three suffering injuries and five perishing. “This arrest is a relief throughout the entire university community,”Vice President of Student Affairs Bill Hall said. “We are going to continue our efforts to improve the safety of our university community.” “The hearts of everyone in the Ohio State family remain with the families and friends of the five students who died. May they take some comfort in the arrest and know that their children, brothers and sisters will be remembered for their contributions to the lives of everyone they touched,” he said.
