The Ohio State pistol team beat the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in all seven of their events this weekend. Senior Jennifer Trickett won six events herself in the 6,298 to 6,189 victory. OSU junior and team captain Anthony Douglass was the top shooter in air pistol (558), the one event that Trickett did not capture.

“So far, so good,” Trickett said of her performance this year. “I’m excited.”

Trickett finished first in free pistol (517), standard pistol (547), three-gun aggregate (1,615), women’s air pistol (363), women’s sport pistol (566) and women’s two-gun aggregate (929). She finished seven points behind Douglass in air pistol, finishing fourth in the event.

“It was a fantastic performance and a gratifying win for us because MIT is a varsity team who, like us, have total school support,” said OSU coach James Sweeney. “So we were on, more or less, equal footing with them – which made it a very good win.”

Besides finishing first in air pistol, Douglass finished second in free pistol (512), fifth in standard pistol (520) and second in three-gun aggregate (1,590).

“I’m pretty confident and overall I’m pleased with my personal performance so far this year – and extremely pleased with the team’s performance,” Douglass said.

Freshman Teresa Meyer, who broke the all-time OSU sport pistol record last week by firing a 574, finished third in standard pistol (528), fifth in women’s air pistol (354), second in women’s sport pistol (565) and second in women’s two-gun aggregate (919).

Senior Stephanie Mack finished fourth in women’s air pistol (355), women’s sport pistol (544) and in women’s two-gun aggregate (899).

In other individual results, junior Bruce Moore finished fifth in free pistol (498), sophomore Chip Mardis finished fifth in three-gun aggregate (1,538) and freshman Laura Diefenderfer finished third in women’s air pistol (357).

Though the team is having another successful year, they are still looking to improve.

“One thing we are looking to improve is our consistency – everybody shooting their average or above,” Sweeney said. “If we shoot our average, then we’re within the top three teams in the nation.”

The team’s ultimate goal is to win the national championship again.

“To win the nationals, a team usually averages about 6,400 points and we are now right around a 6,300 average,” Sweeney said. “So we are within striking distance of a national championship on any given day. This doesn’t guarantee us of winning it, but we’re in the hunt and it’s not out of our reach.”

Douglass, who has personal goals of earning All-American honors in free, standard and air pistol events, also believes that a national championship is within reach.

“As a team, I don’t think that it is out of reach or unreasonable to set the national championship as a goal,” Douglass said.

The team looks to continue its winning ways on Friday when it travels to West Point, N.Y., to take on Army and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
