An Ohio State student who went missing Thursday morning was arrested last night for filing a false police report in Athens, Tenn., said Rick Amweg, assistant chief of University Police.
Hiroshi Hayashi, a junior in pre-computer and information science, told Athens police he was forcefully taken from the Tuttle Park parking lot and held for five days until he escaped in Athens, according to an Athens Police Department media release.
“He did admit that he made this up, that there was no abduction, there was no use of force on campus,” Amweg said to the Associated Press.
As of 11:50 p.m. yesterday, Hayashi is charged with filing a false police report and has been transported to McMinn County Justice Center in Athens.
Hayashi said he was forcefully taken Thursday morning from the Tuttle Park parking lot and transported to Athens, Amweg said. Efforts made by University Police to search cameras in the parking lot have yet to yield any footage of Hayashi.
University Police detective Lt. Rick Green drove to Athens to help with the investigation. The case is also being investigated by Columbus and Tennessee FBI agents.
According to previous Lantern coverage, Hayashi parked his car in the west campus parking lot Thursday morning to attend a class but never made it. There had been no activity on Hayashi’s cell phone or credit cards during the span he was missing, Amweg said.
Hayashi was believed to be the third missing student at OSU in the past year. Brian Shaffer, a medical student, went missing April 1 from the Ugly Tuna Saloona. The remains of Julie Popovich, a part-time OSU student, were found at the Hoover Reservoir in August.
Amweg said Hayashi was transported to a nearby hospital in Athens and was treated for minor injuries.
“(Hayashi) is safe,” Amweg said at a press conference yesterday afternoon. “He is doing as well as can be expected.”
Hayashi will be arraigned this morning, according to a spokeswoman at the Athens Police Department.
Athens is about 400 miles south of Columbus.
