Rock, rap and improvisation all sound good; aiding a region stricken by poverty sounds better. Combining the two? Fantastic.

The Ohio State chapter of Nourish International will host a charity concert Sunday, March 4 at 9 p.m. at the High Five Bar and Grille in the Short North, which will include performances by The Slide Machine, The Jahman Brahman Family, MC Blacksmith and the 8th Floor Improv Comedy Group. The concert will generate funds to jump start two hunger prevention projects.

“We really like the idea of using music to help everyone,” said Casey Chanatry, a senior in music and communication.

Chanatry plays lead guitar for Jahman Brahman and is a member of Nourish International at OSU.

“We feel strongly about the organization’s goals and want to bring as many diverse people together as possible,” he said.

Each set will be about an hour long with 8th Floor performing skits in between to keep the audience entertained.

The OSU Nourish International chapter has partnered with Duke University to aid in small projects for Tanzania.

“This specific project is more about food than anything else,” said Kartik Rao, president of the OSU chapter.

The money collected will fund student-led projects in Tanzania, including the construction of chicken coops and a cow pen for an entire village. To ensure this infrastructure does not go to waste, education will be provided to the villagers about proper care and management of the animals.

They also plan on aiding fishing communities in the Pagani region along the Indian Ocean, assisting fishermen with net repairs and donating new nets made of sturdier materials.

“This is our second main event and we’d love to see a large turnout,” said Rao, a senior in pre-medicine.

The group has plans to hold a poker tournament this spring called “Hold’em for Hunger.” Rao said he hopes it will be the biggest charity poker event of the year.
