The Ohio State men’s tennis team prepares to face their toughest competition this weekend. The team will travel to Virginia Saturday to face undefeated Virginia Commonwealth University. The Buckeyes are coming off a discouraging weekend, in which they lost two matches on the road. The team fell to Kansas and Iowa, by a score of 5-2 and 4-3 respectively. The losses gave the Bucks a 3-8 record on the season.Despite their record, coach John Daly said he is optimistic that the team will soon turn things around. “We’re playing close matches with tough teams on the road,” Daly said. “At this point we just haven’t pulled out the wins.” Daly said his team is capable of winning every match they play, but needs to step it up. The Bucks, sporting an impressive 3-1 record at home, haven’t been able to squeeze out a win on the road this season. Junior Pari Laxminarayan said he thinks the season has been disappointing so far. “All our matches have been real close, we just haven’t been able to pull out a win,” he said. “As a whole, the team really hasn’t performed that well,” senior Scott Wiles said. “We can’t seem to put together a match where everyone plays well,” he added. The Bucks will try to bounce back this weekend, but it won’t be easy. The team has never beaten VCU, which holds a record of 13-0.VCU will be a formidable opponent, Daly said. “They’re a very tough team. They have a lot of foreign players, who are older and more experienced.” Wiles said VCU is one of the best teams they will face this year. “If we’re going to beat them, everyone will have to bring their A-game,” he said.Junior Ben Basil said it will take outstanding performances across the board for the Bucks to have a chance of winning. “The good thing is, we have nothing to lose and everything to gain,” he added.Laxminarayan said the four through six spots in the singles matches will be important to the Bucks’ chances. “They have a couple of guys ranked in the top 100,” he said. “In order for us to win, we’ll have to win the lower matches because their top (three) guys are too good.”Daly said his expectations for this match will remain the same as they have been all season. “On the road, I can only ask the guys to do their best. If they do, we can only hope that it’s good enough to pull out the win.”
