A student group will show their support for hemp by forming a human marijuana leaf tomorrow in front of the Statehouse. The group, For A Better Ohio, will attend a protest at the Statehouse to support the legalization of medical marijuana and the industrial use of hemp. The protest, which begins at 3:00, is sponsored by the Ohio Industrial Hemp and Medical Marijuana Coalition. The organization’s main concerns are environmental protection and medical rights.”We are going to be chanting and the whole nine yards,” said Jason Kabbes, president of For A Better Ohio. The protest will be joined by speakers and supporters of legalization. “We are bringing back the ideology that people have the power to change policy,” said Kenny Schweickart, founder and current state-coordinator of For a Better Ohio.”Our main focus is what we need to do right now,” and that is to support the initiative, Kabbes, an OSU freshman, said. Right now, the group has two initiatives. The first is to legalize marijuana for medical uses so doctors can prescribe it to help alleviate the pain of people who are ill, Kabbes said. The second initiative is to legalize the use of industrial hemp for environmental reasons, he said.According to information from the For A Better Ohio web page, the group needs 100,387 signatures for the initiative to be submitted to the Ohio General Assembly. If it passes, the issue will appear on the ballot in November. If it is rejected, they need an additional 100,387 signatures to force the issue on the ballot. So far, the group has about 40,000 signatures from registered Ohio voters who would like the issue to be on the November ballot.”The initiative is strongly unique because it combines environmental protection with medical rights,” Schweickart said.Educating people about the issue is important, Kabbes said.Marijuana for medical uses is needed by many people, including Cancer patients who are miserable because they can’t be treated, Kabbes said. The industrial use of hemp can also help conserve the environment, he said.”There are so many natural resources that can be saved if hemp can be used instead,” Kabbes said. Hemp can be used to make paper and fuel, as well as other natural resources. Many people are confused about the difference between marijuana and hemp, Schweickart said .”Industrial hemp is not marijuana, cannot be marijuana and never will be marijuana,” Schweickart said. When asked if the group supported the recreational use of marijuana, Kabbes said it should be used with responsibility.Although he isn’t a supporter of recreational use, he said, “I’m a strict believer that if something is not harming another soul and is not detrimental to yourself, you should be able to do it with respect.”The group doesn’t want bad rumors or lies to cause people to think negatively about them, Kabbes said .”We are not crusaders that want to make it legal for people to get stoned all of the time,” Kabbes said. “We’re crusaders to help people who are miserable because they cannot be treated and we’re crusaders to help save the environment.”
