Five people received the Albert J. Kuhn Award Tuesday night for outstanding work submitted to Mosaic, Ohio State’s undergraduate art and literature magazine. Two awards were given for literature and three for art pieces at Tuesday night’s art show and Mosaic art exhibit. The literature awards went to Lindsay Harris for her short story, “Swan Song,” and to Adam Gray for his poem, “Looking Through the Keyhole.” Both read their work Tuesday night.Gray, who won a Kuhn Award last year, said his poem is about a vacation he spent in Cleveland with his brother and father.”Some parts are true, some are embellished,” said Gray, a graduating senior in English, after reading his poem. He said he was happy to learn he had received the award and saw it as a nice addition to his end-of-college activities. The three art awards went to Henrikki Priyanga Tuovinen for an untitled photograph composition, Matthew Roharik for a painting called “Cliffs with Tree,” and Shannon Ortiz for a painting titled “Guava.”Ortiz, a graduating senior in art therapy, had several pieces in the show. One titled “Stephen Pentak’s Landscape” was dedicated to his mentor, a professor of art at OSU.”I want to thank all the people involved with Mosaic ,” Ortiz said. “They did a great job. It’s one of the best shows I’ve seen.”Meghan Reinhardt, art editor, said Mosaic received over 45 pieces, which were interpreted by the eight-person art section of the magazine. The staff then decided which pieces were the best, she said.Reinhardt, a junior in microbiology, said 19 pieces will be shown in the magazine and are on display in the exhibit. Caryn Gostlin, literature editor, said there was an increase in literature submissions as well. She said over 75 people sent in one to five items, and 34 were chosen for this year’s edition.Gostlin, a graduating senior in Spanish and English, said one reason the amount of submissions increased is more publicity. She said the Mosaic staff attempted to reach more freshmen at orientations and the activities fair.”We think something like Mosaic is really important and we want people to know about it,” Gostlin said. The Mosaic exhibit will be on display in the Ohio Union’s Exposures Gallery, second floor of the Ohio Union, through April 18. The 1998 edition of the magazine is scheduled for release on May 20.
