Another defensive meltdown cost the Columbus Crew a win at home on Saturday.

The Crew (3-3-2) lost 3-2 to the New England Revolution (4-2-2) on a heartbreaking goal in the 89th minute.

“This was a disappointing result. We gave up soft goals tonight,” said Crew coach Greg Andrulis.

The Crew has allowed seven goals in its last two games – both losses.

“This is not acceptable. We have to sort it out. We need to concentrate more defensively,” said Crew goalie Jon Busch.

The winning goal was scored by New England forward Taylor Twellman, who leads the MLS in scoring.

“You can’t leave the leading scorer wide open,” Andrulis said. “We’ve got to get tougher immediately.”

New England’s two other goals were scored by midfielder Brian Kamler.

“This was a real team effort,” he said. “You try to get a hold of the ball, and I got good leg on it.”

New England scored the first goal of the game in the 36th minute on a goal from Kamler. Columbus answered back in the 40th when midfielder Ross Paule put the ball past Revolution goalie Adin Brown.

“It’s good to get a goal, but it’s not worth it when you don’t win the game,” Paule said. “You can’t give away points at home. It’s just disappointing.”

The score was tied at 1-1 at halftime.

Uneventful for first 25 minutes in the final half, New England scored its first second-half goal in the 70th minute with Kamler’s second goal of the night.

Just like the first-half goal, the Crew answered right back. In the 76th minute, Crew defender Brian Dunseth scored on an jump kick, his first goal of the season.

But Dunseth was more concerned about defensive problems than his first goal.

“We’ve got to close down defensively. The problem is we’re just not shutting down,” he said.

The Crew lost in the 87th minute against San Jose in its last game, and Twellman’s winning goal on Saturday was in the 89th.

Unlike New England’s two previous goals, Columbus didn’t answer back.

“Our guys lost concentration and we didn’t get enough chances. There’s nothing that I’m happy about,” Andrulis said.

Columbus had chances to score during injury time, but the offense was unable to produce after Twellman’s goal.

“It’ll turn around, but we got to reduce goals,” Busch said.

The Crew’s next game is at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at home against the New York/New Jersey MetroStars.
