The path to graduate school is not always short and straight. A good strategy can help students carve out a future career.”The road to graduate school is paved with a lot more than just good intentions,” said Leila Gardner, a graduate admissions counselor. The process of enrolling in graduate programs is more complicated than for undergraduate schools, she said. Gardner will teach a “How to apply to graduate school” session Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in the Ohio Union. The program is sponsored by the Creative Activities Program. It is open to anyone who wants to create a plan for applying to graduate school, said Debra Bermann, director of the program. Once people start preparing, they often are overwhelmed by the number of decisions to make, Gardner said. These decisions include which school to attend and how to finance their education.Time management in daily life is important when preparing, said Yusaku Sako, a senior majoring in computer and information science. Sako said he plans to apply to graduate schools that are highly ranked in the field of computer science.”I have to spare time to prepare for next month’s Graduate Record Examination. But I also need time to study for the present classes at Ohio State,” Sako said.Another student, who didn’t wish to be named, spent 15 months getting into his masters program. This program will give participants tips and resources, Gardner said. It will be the first step for those who have not yet begun preparing. The fee to attend this program is $15. Anyone interested in this program must register by calling 292-9983 before Saturday.
