All-Ohio Pre-Med Day is back to attract a new crop of future doctors.”It’s basically the only opportunity where a student can talk to the directors of admissions from all the Ohio medical schools on a one-on-one basis in one place,” said Manju Oommen, president of Alpha Epsilon Delta, OSU’s pre-med honorary, and coordinator of the program. An estimated 400 students will gather Saturday in Meiling Hall to talk with medical school representatives, attend information sessions about the admissions processes at each school, and discuss the Medical College Admission Test with test preparation groups such as Kaplan and the Princeton Review, Oommen said. Members of the military branches will also be on hand to discuss alternative methods of funding medical school. The honorary has hosted the event for a long time, Oommen said. “It is one of our biggest service projects of the year.” John Hedge, a junior majoring in microbiology, said he wants information about Ohio’s medical schools because it is easier for state residents to get into these schools.”Saturday will be a good way for me to get to know the criteria of admissions at the different medical schools,” he said. “In April I’ll be taking the MCAT and starting in June, I’ll send my applications in to the schools.”Hedge said he is looking forward to the tours of the different departments in OSU’s medical school.”We get exposed to part of what going to med school is like, and I will be able to find out if I even want to go to med school for four more years,” he said.Oommen said the program will also provide information about how to prepare for medical school during the undergraduate years, as well as tips on how to apply.Students must register to attend, but this can be done at the door for $15, she said.Participating medical schools include Case Western Reserve University, University of Cincinnati and Wright State University.
