A combination of a solid offensive line and a good play calls might be the key to success, said Buckeye coach John Cooper.”We use a lot of different offensive sets,” he said. “I think that’s why we have so many guys go into professional football. What we do offensively and defensively is conducive to those guys going to the next level.”Ohio State’s offensive line has seen some changes in the last few weeks. Senior Eric Gohlstin moved from center to right tackle and sophomore Kurt Murphy was elevated from backup to starter at the center spot.Cooper is happy with the changes on the offensive line and said, “a lot of it has to do with who you’re playing against.”The Buckeyes face Michigan State (5-2, 2-2) at Spartan Stadium on Saturday.Michigan State is coming off of a 23-7 loss to Michigan and will be ready to play, said Cooper. “Michigan played a great game,” he said. “I’ve said this all year, you’re only as good as your opponent. But, Nick (Saban, Michigan State coach) will have his team all fired up.”If Michigan State loses to the Buckeyes this Saturday it will be the third loss for the Spartans, making the team’s chances of going to the Rose Bowl slim to nil.”You can’t lose three and have a legitimate chance to go to the Rose Bowl,” Cooper said.Ohio State is still in the running, but a few things have to happen first. Prognosticators say Penn State and Michigan will each have to lose twice, and OSU will have to win the rest of its games to win the Big Ten title outright. It’s going to come down to the team who avoids the big upset, Cooper said. But the race is fun, he said. “This has been one of the most exciting seasons for me all year, to watch them (the players) mature. We haven’t had a lot of problems,” he said while knocking on the wood table. The main thing Cooper’s looking for in this weekend’s game is effort, he said. “That’s what I grade on. The effort should be consistent.”Last week’s game against Northwestern was the best performance the Buckeyes had all year, Cooper said.Players of the game honors went to fullback Matt Keller and flanker Dee Miller. Left guard Rob Murphy received offensive lineman of the game.”The key to last week’s game was scoring before halftime,” Cooper said. “(Quarterback Stanley) Jackson engineered a couple of drives that put the game out of reach.”The Buckeyes cannot be one dimensional going into Saturday’s game, Cooper said. “We’ve got to have options to win. There are too many good coaches in this league.”The quarterback plan remains the same with Jackson as the starter and Joe Germaine as backup. Cooper said “Saturday was the best (quarterback) balance we’ve had all year.”
