Fifty-six of the 88 divers who qualified for the camp competed for a spot on the USA team, which has three international competitions scheduled in 2009: the Canada Cup, May 1-3; the AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix, May 7-9; and the World Championships, July 18-25 in Rome, Italy.
Seniors Wes Wieser and Chelsea Davis, juniors Burkley Showe and Ryan Jefferson and sophomores Sean Moore, Bianca Alvarez and Kristen Asman represented the Buckeyes in the event.
Last week, Moore was named Big Ten Diver of the Week and Athlete of the Week after winning both diving events in a Big Ten quad meet Jan. 30-31.
He said he thought he did well and enjoyed competing against the nation’s best.
Some of the athletes were 2008 Olympic Team members. David Boudia, Chris Colwill, Troy Dumais, Thomas Finchum, Nanciella Foster, Haley Ishimatsu and Laura Wilkinson all competed for spots on the team.
“Competing against all this talent really gets us pumped for our upcoming championship meets,” Moore said.
The Buckeyes get the weekend off to continue preparation for their respective Big Ten Championship meets. The women’s meet is Feb. 19-21 in Ann Arbor, Mich., and the men compete Feb. 26-28 in West Lafayette, Ind.
“I think I did pretty good. I think I did best in the final platform round,” Moore said. “Competing against all this talent really pumps us up for Big Ten’s and NCAA’s.”
