Columbus’ own 50 Watt Alarm Clock will release their self-produced first full-length compact disc, “Abstracted View,” Saturday June 14, at their live show at Chelsie’s.50 Watt Alarm Clock formed in the summer of 1993 when guitarist Brian Harsh and drummer Gregg Scott teamed with vocalist Ron Johnson and bassist Tom Clarkson to create a new mix of heavy alternative rock. Johnson, a junior majoring in fine arts, complements the intense sound of the band with equally profound vocals.Through live shows on local radio stations WWCD 101 and WBZX the Blitz, the band has built a solid following in Columbus. In 1994, they won an award for best heavy rock artist at the Columbus Music Awards.50 Watt Alarm Clock went on to perform opening spots at arena shows with Van Halen, Live, Collective Soul and Our Lady Peace. Opening spots on the club scene included Seven Mary Three, Poe, Matchbox 20, Tree, Kyuss, Stompbox and Seed, Johnson said.The band has broken ground in the New York music scene with return trips to The Lion’s Den and the Continental Club. Consecutive trips to Cleveland’s Undercurrents showcase has also provided exposure for the band.”Abstracted View” consists of selections from three years of recorded material by 50 Watt Alarm Clock. WWCD 101 will present the show on June 14, which also features Dogrocket, Dharma Sons and Tim Ownings.
