The new Woody Allen film, “Deconstructing Harry,” is a great comedy, led by an all-star cast that doesn’t overshadow the characters they play. The movie centers on Allen’s character, Harry Block, a successful writer who bases his fiction upon the events and crises of his personal life. The problem is that he barely disguises the people in his life who he has made into characters. The movie constantly jumps from telling the story of Block’s life in the present to scenes of his past which he has fictionalized in his novels.Every scene in the film depicts exactly why Block has become the neurotic person he is. His past affair with his ex-wife’s sister is turned into a hilarious black comedy featuring Julia Louis-Dreyfus. He also has an affair with a patient of his second wife, a psychologist played by Kirstie Alley, and blames her for the affair by holding her practice in their home.In spite of all this mayhem Block brings upon himself, the audience can’t help but like him because of the wit he shows in the many ways he handles these situations. The movie takes off when Block is about to be honored at his alma mater in up-state New York. This event sparks Block’s search to find a companion to witness his literary accomplishments at the honors ceremony. He has a hard time doing so. The reason he is in this dilemma is because he has turned almost everyone in his life away from the loathsome person he has become. In the movie, Block constantly whines and complains to the camera about his despicable behavior. He states that he can’t live without prescription drugs, booze or sex. He has next to no morals, sleeping with hookers and kidnapping, and rationalizes all of it to himself in the process. The idea that such a screwed up individual will be honored at a university is an oxymoron which is obvious when he is completely exposed once he reaches his destination.Although Allen claims that none of his films are autobiographical, one can’t help but notice the parallels between his character and himself. Allen is viewed by the media of late just as negatively as Harry Block.Perhaps Allen is using this movie as a vehicle to rationalize his affair and marriage with his adopted daughter, Soon-Yi Previn. Maybe the film should have been titled “Deconstructing Woody.”
