From frog baseball to the big screen, Beavis and Butt-Head do America in a big way, trying to score with chicks while finding their lost television.Creator Mike Judge said he is very proud of the movie ‘Beavis and Butt-Head Do America,’ based on the cartoon about two hormonally-challenged teenagers finding sexual innuendo in the most innocent of places while watching bad videos.Basically, the movie, which won’t be out until late December, revolves around Beavis and Butt-Head on a trek across America, trying to find their stolen television.’They’re more nerdy than they are metalheads,’ Judge said. ‘The guys are geeks without the advantage of being brainy.’The inspiration for these two characters came from classmates Judge knew while in high school.’I played in this band and this guy who sat in the front row would never look at you and always had this strange laugh, so he became Beavis,’ Judge said. ‘I was trying to draw a guy I went to high school with and one of the attempts ended up being Butt-Head.’Judge, who graduated from the University of California, San Diego with a degree in physics, decided he wanted to do comedy and figured the best way to break into the business was to do some sort of animated short. He taught himself to animate, sent out copies of his cartoons to animation festivals and finally got MTV’s ‘Liquid Television’ interested in his first Beavis and Butt-Head segment ‘Frog Baseball.’MTV picked up the segment and asked Judge to produce more episodes, eventually resulting in his own TV show. Soon after that, major motion picture studios starting vying for film rights.’Back then I wasn’t even thinking movie,’ Judge said. ‘I was just blown away that it got seen by the right people and it became a TV show.’Judge said the core of Beavis and Butt-Head lies in their everlasting frustration of not being able to lose their virginity at their ripe hormonal age.’They’re typical teenagers with exploding hormones. Problem is, if you’re a lame guy like Beavis or Butt-Head, there’s no chance you’re going to get anywhere near a girl. So there’s an incredible amount of frustration all the time,’ Judge said.Another part of what makes these two guys so popular is the fact that they seem ‘real’ to the audience, with many fans saying they know a Beavis or Butt-Head in their life, Judge said.It is important to remember that these guys are cartoon characters, hence they’re not real, said Abby Terkuhle, MTV creative director and producer of the Beavis and Butt-Head movie.’These guys are over-the-top, they’re exaggerated, they’re everything cartoon characters should be. But at the same time, it’s important to remember that they’re cartoon characters and we keep them in that fictional world,’ Terkuhle said. The animating world of Beavis and Butt-Head is described as ‘crude realism,’ creating a humor that’s not on the dark side but definitely not light-hearted.People laugh at Beavis and Butt-Head because they find the most ridiculous, not-funny things to be hilarious, especially if they’re related to sex.’I think one reason people like to watch them is because they say things that most people would never be stupid enough to let out of their mouths,’ Judge said. ‘There’s just something liberating about watching Beavis and Butt-Head shamelessly spilling anything and everything that happens to be on their minds.’For Beavis and Butt-Head fans, rest assured that the movie does not detract from the characters. Judge said viewers could just listen to the track and still get all the humor, without watching the movie.’We’ve made the kind of movie that makes you feel good for a day or two just thinking about it,’ he said. ‘I’m very proud of the film. It’s damn funny.’
