The Ohio State men’s basketball team suffered their worst defeat of the Big Ten season at the hands of the Michigan State Spartans as they fell 84-58 Wednesday night in St. John Arena.Michigan State proved why they have one of the best defenses in the Big Ten as they held the Bucks to 37 percent from the field, including 8.3 percent from three-point range.”They are just bringing it to you for the entire 40 minutes,” said Ohio State coach Jim O’Brien. “The thing that impresses me is that they are very hungry.”The Spartans also dominated on the boards as they out-rebounded the Buckeyes 41-25. They also denied a lot of second-chance opportunities as they pulled down 22 defensive boards to the Buckeyes’ eight. The Buckeyes did an excellent job of defending Michigan State’s star guard Mateen Cleaves, holding him to seven points, 10 below his average. “They did an excellent job on Mateen Cleaves in their preparation,” said Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo. “They did a lot of things to take him out of the mix, and to his credit he got the ball to the right people at the right time.”But Spartan swingman Jason Klein absorbed some of the loss by scoring 25 points and going 10 of 15 from the field.”Klein got a couple shots off early, made them and really got us jump started,” Izzo said. “He struggled in the last couple of weeks and that was big for us.”Freshman guard Michael Redd once again held the high mark for the Buckeyes, scoring 23 points in the losing effort. Sophomore center Ken Johnson was next for the Bucks, scoring a career-high 14 points. Freshman forward Jon Sanderson pulled down a team – high seven rebounds. The Buckeyes’ head coach did give credit in his postgame press conference to the one constant in the season so far – the fans.”I think that we have terrific fans and I think that they have been marvelous,” O’Brien said. “For them to come and just hope for something and wish for something, I think that our fans deserve an awful lot of credit and I hope that they don’t throw the towel in on us and they continue to support us through the end of the year.”The loss extended the Buckeyes’ losing streak to 11 consecutive games and 14 straight Big Ten games, both school records. They now drop to 0-8 in the Big Ten and 7-14 overall. The Bucks round out the homestand Saturday night against the Purdue Boilermakers in St. John Arena at 8 pm.
