Cartoon promotes racist stereotypes

I happened to glance through the Lantern last Tuesday and found a blatantly racist, historically inaccurate, cartoon (“Fathertyme” 2-3-98). I was offended enough to look through a few Lanterns from last week and found another equally offensive, racist cartoon (“Fathertyme” 1-29-98).By publishing such material, the Lantern is responsible for promoting harmful racial stereotypes. What is the rationale for publishing such a cartoon? I am all for freedom of speech, but that doesn’t mean that the Lantern should give a forum to a racist. If the author, Antoine Perkins, wants to spread trash like this, let him make copies himself and pass them out on the oval, but do not give him a forum. Additionally, Perkins shows his ignorance of basic U.S. history in his cartoon. Just another reason not to publish his cartoons that claim to represent the “past.”
