If you hear many people arguing on campus this weekend, do not be alarmed. These are just the sounds of the Holiday Frolic Forensics Tournament. It is the largest intercollegiate Speech and Debate tournament in the Midwest, said Mark Hickman, coordinator of the Ohio State Forensics Program.’We have been running this tournament for about the past 10 years,’ Hickman said. Students will be competing in 11 public speaking and performance categories such as persuasion, after dinner speaking, and dramatic literature presentation. There are two categories in which students compete: novice, for first year competitors and varsity, for competitors who have more experience. Not all of the students in the OSU Forensics program will be competing in this weekend’s event, said Amy Bernhardt, secretary of Phi Kappa Delta, the Forensics honorary fraternity.’Ohio State is only allowing novices to compete because everyone else is needed to help put on the event,’ she said.OSU novices only compete for experience and do not place in the tournament, Hickman said. This year’s event will include 30 colleges and universities, Bernhardt said. ‘Some of the schools attending include Harvard, Central Mississippi, Colorado State and Berry,’ Bernhardt said.Another school that will be attending is Western Kentucky University, the reigning national champions in debate. Judy Woodring, director of forensics for Western Kentucky University, said the school attends the event every year.Hickman said that the tournament will be held in several buildings on campus.’Room 211 Ohio Union will be our headquarters, but events will be taking place in Hagerty, Mendenhall, the law building, possibly Sullivant and Enarson,’ he said. The public is welcome to observe the tournament proceedings, Hickman said.’They should come to tournament headquarters to find out what is going on,’ he said. The first event will begin at 1 p.m. today.
