Geiger unsure of effect of NCAA ruling, not surprised
Yesterday’s ruling that the NCAA must pay a $67 million fine to restricted earnings coaches shocked the public, but not those who are directly involved. Andy Geiger, Ohio State athletics director, was one who was not surprised by the verdict.”We knew they lost,” Geiger said. “What we didn’t know was how much they lost by.”What I have been surprised by is how much the NCAA fought it. I thought it was a loser, a lot of people thought it was a loser and they turned a battle into a war. “And lost.”Geiger also explained OSU’s stand on restricted earnings coaches. “We obeyed the legislation when it was in place,” Geiger said. “We do not have very many in that category at this point. We pretty much pay an internship or an entry-level rate, and we don’t stick to a restricted earnings category.”Geiger agreed with a categorization of OSU’s restricted earnings coaches being so in name only. “I don’t know what the direct effect will be,” Geiger said. “It has been anticipated for a while.”
