Hecklers out of line, student says
Many questions were raised in my mind after watching the town meeting Wednesday at St. John Arena. My questions are probably similar to those of most other people. I’m wondering whether it is just to risk our troops lives in order to force Hussein to comply with a U.N. regulation. After all, his obedience to the United Nations following the Gulf War was rather short lived. However, the issue that plagues me most is that some students of Ohio State chose to heckle the panel of officials throughout the meeting. On a number of occasions, Secretary Albright and Secretary Cohen were interrupted by the obnoxious and, at times, obscene comments from some of those who attended the meeting. I was embarrassed by the blatant lack of respect that was shown to the panel. Their disruptive, incoherent, unintelligible behavior brought shame to our university. One student made a complete fool of himself by claiming that someone was purposely turning his microphone off so his comments couldn’t be heard; his microphone was on the whole time. This obtuse student buried himself by saying that the meeting was simply a staged “media event” and was lacking democracy. If the “media event” was so unrepresentative of democracy, I wonder how he was able to stand at that microphone and make himself look like an idiot for so long. The fact that some people were being disruptive simply shows that they were afraid to hear the panel’s rebuttal to the questions that were raised. I hope that the millions of people around the world that were watching the broadcast don’t hold OSU accountable for the dolts that showed up at St. John Arena Wednesday.
