Icers finish season with loss to Miami

The Ohio State hockey team had its season come to an end over the weekend, losing the first two games of a best-of-three CCHA playoff series to the Miami (OH) Redskins. The Buckeyes lost on Saturday 4-2, after falling 4-1 on Friday.Saturday the Bucks jumped to a 1-0 lead early in the first period on a Brian Morrison goal, his fourth of the season. Miami struck back at the 13:42 mark of the first on a goal by Dan Boyle.Chad Power scored in the second to put the Bucks on top 2-1 going in to the third.In The final period of play Miami scored three unanswered goals, all within the first six and one-half minutes of the period.Miami outshot OSU 28-20 on the night. Buckeye goalie Ray Aho had 24 saves, while Redskins goaltender Trevor Prior stopped 18 shots on net.In Friday’s game Miami jumped to an early lead as Marc Tropper scored in the first to put Miami up 1-0.OSU answered with Chris Feil’s goal in the second, but Miami scored one more in the second period and two in the third to win 4-1.Friday’s game did see the Bucks outshot the Redskins 36-24.The powerplay unit was ineffective for OSU, as they went a combined 0-11 on the weekend.The Bucks closed out the season with a record of 12-25-2.Tennis team losesThe women’s tennis team lost at Minnesota on Saturday 6-1, to fall to 5-5 on the season.OSU won only one of six singles matches, with the lone win coming from Carolina Nahuz. Nahuz was a 7-6, 6-4 winner over Helen Wang.Mandi Yeley lost a tough three-set match to Jana Hrdinova 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.Of the three doubles matches, OSU won one. Kerry Singer and Yeley combined for a 8-3 win.With the loss OSU slipped to 0-3 in the Big Ten.Spikers win easilyThe volleyball team won on Saturday in three straight games over Tri-State.The Buckeyes won 15-3, 15-2, 15-13 in a time of one hour and two minutes, to improve their record on the year to 15-6.Phil Kerewich led the team with a game high 12 kills.Next up is a match at Lewis University on March 12.Softballers take twoThe women’s softball team concluded their weekend at the Super 8 Aggie Invitational II with a 2-4 record.The Lady Bucks started the tournament by dropping their first four games, before winning their final two.The team picked up both of their victories on Sunday, beating Northern Illinois 2-1 and then beating Louisiana Tech 3-2.The win against Northern Illinois saw designated hitter Amy Haug go 2-3, with two RBI’s. Haug doubled in the winning run in the first inning. The game against Louisiana Tech had Buckeye Ginger Bonnell also go 2-3 with one RBI. Bonnell doubled in Natalie Tomoguchi with the winning run in the second inning.OSU lost twice on the weekend to Texas AM. Saturday the Bucks lost to the Aggies 4-0 and on Friday they lost 2-0. On the season OSU stands at 9-7.England takes thirdBuckeye Chris England took thrid place honors at the NCAA Indoor Track Championships in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 14-minutes, 4.52 seconds.
