Jack O’Neil and Cary Pierce didn’t have a name for their duo when they started performing together. According to Pierce, when friends were making plans for the weekend they would say, ‘lets go see Jacko and Pierce play.’ Eight years later, Jackopierce is a four-member band and that is coming to Columbus.’I love Columbus,’ Pierce said. The band has already played here numerous times, appearing at Stache’s, Ludlow’s and The Patio. Pierce said Columbus crowds are great. Pierce also mentioned, in a phone interview, that he enjoyed walking around and shopping in the OSU area.’I was really blown away that you had such a nice museum on campus,’ Pierce said of a recent visit to the Wexner Center. Jackopierce is on tour promoting their new release ‘Finest Hour.’ All four band members O’Neil, Pierce, Clay Pendergrass and Earl Darling contributed lyrics and music on this recording.’We edit each others lyrics,’ Pierce said. Pierce described the creative process within the band as a collaborative effort. Pierce said he looks to many sources for inspirations when writing songs. For example, the song ‘Is It the Sun,’ is about the standard Los Angeles guy, Pierce said. ‘I live in the hills, this star lives on my street, we want to know, is she the next big thing,’ are lyrics which describe an attitude Pierce saw in Los Angeles.’We spent a lot of time in L.A. and got a real feel for what it’s like,’ Pierce said. The lyrics can range anywhere from obsessive love, to the road not taken. The sources of inspiration are also varied, even coming from books and movies. ”The Player’ is the best film ever made,’ Pierce said in a matter-of-fact tone. The dichotomy of evil and good characters has provided Pierce with inspiration and introspection, he said’Where do I fit in between those two stereotypes?’ Pierce said he asks himself.Pierce said he is excited to be playing here Sunday and to see the opening band, God Street Wine. One of the band’s members, Danny Pifer, went to high school with Pierce where they played soccer together. The band will be at the Newport Sunday. They will be playing in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Friday. Pierce said he likes the northern city, but is still faithful to his Columbus audience.’The OSU crowd kicks butt, of course,’ Pierce said.
