The women’s golf team’s season came to an end May 23 as the Buckeyes placed 12th at the NCAA Championships in Madison, Wisc.Ohio State shot a 1208 (294-299-310-305) in the tournament, 53 strokes behind champion Arizona State and one shot ahead of Big Ten champ Indiana.”We are happy we placed 12th, but we knew we could have done better,” said sophomore Amber Amstutz.Senior captain Marisa Wilhelm led the Buckeyes with a 12-over par 300, finishing tied for 30th. “I was happy we made it there. Once you’re there there’s no pressure, you just relax and have a good time,” Wilhelm said.Junior Natalie Mosher started off well with a first-round 72, but fell off pace with an 81 on the third day.”Natalie had a couple big numbers that round. She had a triple (bogey) and a double and that was really the difference,” said coach Therese Hession.Mosher finished the tournament tied for 42nd at +15 while sophomore Lisa Strom and senior Bethany Overstake were close behind at +16 and +17, respectively. Strom finished tied for 48th and Overstake tied for 50th.Amstutz began the tournament with a career low 74 and ended with a 76 on the final day but scores of 81 and 82 in the middle rounds gave her a 313 (+25). The tournament was the last for the seniors, Wilhelm and Overstake. Hession has been happy with their leadership.”They’ve really played steady this year. Both have been great leaders this spring and have just been great for us,” she said.Wilhelm was reflective after the tournament.”It’s a sad feeling. A big part of my life is over now,” she said. The Buckeyes were happy to play on a northern course with familiar conditions, but the advantage they imagined was not realized.”We had cold conditions on the third day and we thought that would work to our advantage,” said Hession. “But it just didn’t work out that way.””I loved the course – it was what we’re used to in the Midwest,” said Amstutz, referring to the bent grass course which is typical on northern courses. “But the grass doesn’t matter to good teams.”
