Lantern alumnus defends “Latrine”
I’m writing in response to Colleen Labbe’s scathing indictment of the Lantern as a “sleazy tabloid.”Colleen, since you have so thoroughly examined the Lantern in order to arrive at your judgment, you surely know that it is a student newspaper; while this isn’t meant as an excuse, it should indicate that these are not professional journalists, but young people learning important skills. I’m sure you were an expert driver the day you got your temporary permit, right?Yes, there are items in the paper that could be described as offensive, poorly written and/or perhaps devoid of any redeeming value, but that is true of nearly every newspaper – and media outlet – you care to review. However, this is subject to opinion; while your opinion has value, so do the opinions of others who might feel differently than you. In your economy, do they count?Rather than offer sweeping generalizations, why not be specific and discuss individual items which you find offensive or otherwise problematic? Don’t they still teach that in grad school? And yes, Colleen, I spent many years as either a writer or editor at the Lantern, both as an undergrad and grad student. I’m not ashamed to admit it. And while I wouldn’t argue it is the model of journalism you apparently expect, many students have made a serious effort to produce a credible product. And judging by the awards hanging on the wall of the J-School, the Society of Professional Journalists must think those students are doing something right – your opinion notwithstanding.Just one other thing, Colleen: how much did you pay for your subscription? Oh, I see…
