Ohio State was the first university to offer students fast food chain restaurants on campus almost 20 years ago and this fall will see three new eateries in the Ohio Union food court.Tubby’s Submarine, Ashby’s Ice Cream and Stuff Your Face Pizza will be replaced by Sbarro, Steak Escape, and Chick-Fil-A. “We wanted a change from what was there. The store fronts needed renovating and their leases were up,” said Frank Gencur, associate director of Ohio Unions. The three restaurants were owned and operated by the same owner and were given the chance to bid for the space, as were several other fast food restaurants. The union has the choice as well as the owner to renegotiate the lease or put the space out as a bid, Gencur said.Bids were given to several fast food restaurants, including High Street vendors. “I think it is great that OSU is adding more well known established fast food chain restaurants to the union. I think it will raise the quality of food,” said Brad Cicala, a junior majoring in business.Variety and familiarity were what the union was looking for. The restaurants will begin construction Aug. 1 and will be ready to open Sept. 19, Gencur said.”We always keep students in mind because they are our primary customers. We want to give them what they know and like,” Gencur said.Steak Escape, known for Philly steak sandwiches, is also located in the Drake Union. Sbarro’s menu includes pizza, pasta and salads and Chick-Fil-A offers a wide variety of chicken products. In addition to the new restaurants, UPS will have a location in the union. They move into the old arcade space.”I think UPS is a great idea. The only other place to ship packages is the post office and there is no parking available which makes it inconvenience,” said Meredith Hufford, a junior majoring in child and family studies.
