The Columbus Crew will be taking Major League Soccer’s stingiest defense into Lockhart Stadium to take on Carlos Valderrama and the 4-4 Miami Fusion tomorrow at 4 p.m.Through seven games, the Columbus squad has allowed a meager 1.14 goals per game to lead the league. The defensive barricade helped Crew keeper Juergen Sommer win the MLS player of the month award for April. During the month, Sommer posted a 4-1 record with a goals against average of one and a shutout, the first of his MLS career. But, it’s not just defense around here. The Crew also features the second most prolific scoring attack in the league, boasting 15 goals scored so far this season, five of which have come off the feet and head of Brian McBride and four from rookie Stern John.U.S. National Team Coach Steve Sampson chose four Crew players to play for the National Team, which will be competing in the 1998 World Cup this June and July in France. The Crew was the only team in the MLS to have more than two players selected to the team. The four Crew players to make the squad were midfielder Brian Maisonneuve, defender Thomas Dooley, forward McBride and goalie Sommer.”These players have worked their whole life to have a chance to be selected to the National Team and be a part of the World Cup,” Crew coach Tom Fitzgerald said. “It’s an honor for them to be selected to represent the U.S.”Dooley, 36, who is expected to be named the U.S. team’s captain, and Sommer, 28, played on the 1994 World Cup team. But this will the first appearances for McBride, 25, and Maisonneuve, 24.”I am very excited – it’s a dream come true. This is all I have thought about the last couple of months,” Maisonneuve said. “I knew that I had a slim chance, but it came true.””It shows that Fitzgerald put together a team of high quality,” McBride said. The four players will leave the Crew May 11 to begin training with the U.S. squad full-time. The first U.S. match will be June 15 against Germany, which is the birth place of Dooley.”Playing Germany definitely means more to me than playing Italy, Spain or France, but my main focus is on winning as a team,” Dooley said.In addition to the four Crew players that will be representing the U.S., another Crew player will be representing his country in the World Cup. Andrew Williams, who has not appeared in a Crew uniform this season due to national team commitments, will be playing on the Jamaican squad. Not only will the Crew be well represented in World Cup play, but the MLS All-Star Game will have a Columbus flavor as well. Dooley, McBride, Maisonneuve, and Sommer have been selected as members of the USA All-Star squad and Robert Warzycha and Ricardo Irabarren have been chosen to be on the World All-Star squad. In tomorrow’s match-up, the Fusion will be attempting to avenge their April 18, 5-1 loss to the Crew in Ohio Stadium. The Crew will be without the services of midfielder Ansil Elcock, who will be playing with the Trinidad and Tobago National Team in Paris.”Not having Elcock will be a big loss for us – Elcock is the fastest guy on the team,” Fitzgerald said. “Miami has the largest field in the league and we could use his speed.”The Crew will also be without defender Mike Clark, who will be forced to sit out after receiving two yellow cards in the April 30 match against Tampa Bay.A key matchup will be between McBride and Fusion defender Wade Webber, who is one of the few defenders in the league who can match McBride in the air.
