The Ohio State synchronized swimming team, sporting a 13-0 record, will try to continue submerging its competition this weekend. The Buckeyes host the Ohio State Collegiate Association meet Saturday at Larkins Hall at 12:30 p.m. OSU will face off against the University of Richmond, William and Mary, St. Olaf College, Michigan State, Michigan, Iowa and Indiana. The Bucks are coming off an atypical victory at the Canisius Invitational last week, where for the first time this season they didn’t dominate. The team struggled at first, but maintained their composure to win the meet with 82 points. Canisius finished second with 74 points, Walsh College finished third with 65 points and Keuka College finished last with 52 points.Although the Bucks pulled out the win, coach Linda Lichter-Witter said she wasn’t very pleased with her teams performance. “A win is a win, but that was really not acceptable,” Lichter-Witter said. The team will have to perform much better to be successful at nationals. “Last week should serve as a wake-up call for us,” Lichter-Witter said.”Although we won, we did not characterize ourselves as National Champions,” Lisa Nielsen said. “It was really an eye opener which scared us into really preparing for this weekend.”Ana Cukic agreed the team should have performed better. “We had a rough start, but we were able to pull together at the end. We’ll use this weekend to prove to ourselves that we can really swim as good as we think we can,” Cukic said.Last week also showcased the first time the team routine, where all eight members swim together, was introduced to competition this season. Until that point, the team only performed the solo, duet and trio routines. Nielsen said the team performed well for their first competition, but has a lot of work to do. “We did not swim to our potential and we need to get some kinks out of our routine,” Nielsen said. “It’s just good that we were able to get through a meet knowing our team routine came out with a win.”This weekend should not challenge the Bucks, but instead will serve as a warm up for the Wheaton Invitational on Feb. 21. At this meet, OSU will face their arch-rival Stanford for the first time this season.Assistant coach Holly Vargo Brown said the meet on Saturday is important because it is the first time the team routine will be performed at home. “This weekend should really put the team to a test,” Brown said. “There is a lot of pressure to get a strong meet under our belt.” Brown said this meet is incredibly important in preparing for the Wheaton Invitational. The Bucks will try to take advantage of this weekend to get all their routines in order, Lichter-Witter said. “A strong performance this weekend is very important to making a strong showing on the 21st against Stanford,” Lichter-Witter said.
