ANN ARBOR, Mich. – All the pregame hype centered around the matchup between Ohio State wide receiver David Boston and Michigan cornerback Charles Woodson. The hype did not focus on OSU cornerback Antoine Winfield and the Wolverine wide receivers – maybe because everyone knew it would be no contest.Winfield certainly knew.”I told Tai Streets before the game that he wasn’t going to have one catch,” Winfield said. “Tai Streets was my man, and I shut him down.”Not only did Winfield prevent the Michigan wide receiver from making a reception, he kept everybody he covered from catching anything. Neither Winfield nor Ahmed Plummer, the other Buckeye cornerback, gave up a catch to a Michigan wide receiver. In fact, the only Wolverine connection to a non-running back or tight end came on busted coverage, when Woodson lined up as a split end and hauled in a 37-yard catch.Winfield had a game-high 10 tackles in the 20-14 loss, including six for a gain of two yards or less. Four of the tackles prevented Michigan from converting a third down.”I just wasn’t going to give in,” Winfield said. “No slipped tackles and no extra yards.”Coach John Cooper said he expected a strong performance from Winfield.”I’ve said all season long he’s the best corner I’ve ever had,” Cooper said. “Today he proved it.”Winfield said it doesn’t matter how well he played.”We still lost,” he said. “We outplayed them, but they still came out on top. It’s frustrating and disappointing.”Winfield said it is important for the team to maintain confidence.”There’s still a bowl game to prepare for, and we can’t let that get away from us,” he said. “It’s disappointing we’re not going to the Rose Bowl, but we have to get past it.”We’ll bounce back,” Winfield said. “It will take a little time, but we’ll be ready.”The Buckeyes may play Florida in the Citrus Bowl. A Citrus Bowl representative scouted Saturday’s game. He said it is “very likely” the Buckeyes will receive an invitation to play in Orlando for the third time in five years.
