What could be better than a night watching porn? Act Out Productions current show “Making Porn,” analyzes the inner workings of the gay pornography industry in San Francisco, during the early 1980s. “Making Porn” is an entertaining and emotionally charged production that focuses on the fact that the people in this industry are real. They have dreams, needs, and pornography is their job, not their life.It stars Rob Wagner, Deborah Vrobel, Scott Foltz, Joe Williams, Michael Dutcher, R. Scott Whitaker, and Andre’ Williams. It is directed by Frank Barnhart.Rob Wagner plays Jack, a straight, married, and out of work actor. Jack has not been cast since college and his wife goes as far as to call him “a professional auditioner.” Jack turns to pornography as a way to help make ends meet.Wagner does an excellent job of conveying the angst Jack feels in making these films and the inner-turmoil he faces in keeping his work secret from Linda. Jack’s wife Linda is played by Deborah Vrobel. Vrobel gives a convincing performance as a wife who goes from embarrassed to exploitative of her husband’s career. Vrobel’s comedic timing is excellent and she does a great job of breaking up moments that would otherwise be very tense.Scott Foltz gives a strong performance as Ray, a veteran of the pornography industry. He has been the star of many hit porn flicks, but now is unsure if he wants to continue making films. Instead he has taken to hustling and exotic dancing.Joe Williams plays Ricky, who’s lifelong dream is to be a porn star. Upon meeting Ray, he decides to give it a shot. Williams is highly believable as a naive college student. The director of these films is Arthur, played by Michael Dutcher. Dutcher is fabulous as a snippy and overly demanding director. His assistant and partner is Jamie, played by R. Scott Whitaker. The chemistry between Dutcher and Whitaker is outstanding and throughout the play you find yourself being drawn deeper and deeper into their lives. The two constantly bicker back and forth and the result is hilarious.R. Scott Whitaker is a scene stealer in his portrayal of Jamie. Jamie is caring and sensitive but he is constantly dumped on by Arthur. Their relationship is strained and Jamie finally decides to leave and pursue other things.Andre’ Williams is quite erotic as a dancer and often amusing in his role as a stage hand.”Making Porn” does a great job of drawing one into the lives of the performers. When AIDS becomes a scare during the late 1980s the pornography industry had to make dramatic changes. “Making Porn,” details the reasons for these changes and the character involvement is excellent.Act Out Productions definitely has a winning production on their hands.
