The marquee names for Ohio State’s womens’ track team performed up to their usual excellence at this weekend’s Big Ten indoor championships. Unfortunately for OSU, the strong individual exploits weren’t enough to dethrone defending champion Michigan. The Wolverines repeated their title with a team score of 116 points and proudly took a victory lap around the French Field House track shouting “Go Blue!”The Buckeyes finished fifth with a score of 78, but the difference in points between third-place Indiana and fourth-place Wisconsin was very close. “We knew it was going to be a tight meet between all the teams,” assistant coach Candy Young said. “Overall, I don’t think we have anything to be ashamed of.” OSU’s two All-Americans, Dominque Calloway and Donica Merriman, shook off the intense pressure surrounding them and each garnered championships. Merriman defended her title in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.37. “It was much harder running today because last year, I wasn’t expected to win. This year, on the other hand, everyone was gunning for me,” Merriman said.Calloway took the 200 meters and anchored the winning 4 x 400 meter relay team. “This weekend will definitely help my confidence at the NCAA’s because it showed me I can compete at the high level you need for nationals,” Calloway said.A pleasant surprise came from Carrie Hoblet in the 800 meters. She won the event with a time of 2:11.76. “Carrie’s had a chest cold for the last six weeks. Today she showed a lot of heart and determination,” coach Russ Rogers said.Desiree Jones accounted for the Buck’s fourth title by rebounding from last season’s second place finish in the pentathlon to take it this year.”They’re the leaders and I’m not all that surprised with what they accomplished this weekend,” Rogers said. “The best thing is that they’re all coming back… I think we can win this thing next year.”
