Trekkies or Trekkers, and supporters of diversity will be pleased to know “Mr. Sulu” is beaming himself to Ohio State tonight.George Takei is best known for his portrayal of Hikaru Sulu, helmsman of the starship U.S.S. Enterprise on the television series “Star Trek.”Takei was an original cast member in the diverse series along with William Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk, and Leonard Nimoy, who played Mr. Spock. As part of Asian Awareness Month, Takei will be the keynote speaker on the topic of infinite diversity when he comes to Ohio State.”Mr. Takei is an excellent role model for students because of his film accomplishments and community service. But he appeals to a broad audience because of ‘Star Trek,'” said Sheila Kapur, coordinator of Asian American Student Services.Takei will address his personal journey in the film industry, including how he overcame obstacles of racism and stereotypes.”Star Trek” served as his launching pad for several other acting endeavors. He has guest-starred on over 30 popular television series and acted in several theatrical productions. In 1988, he received a Grammy nomination in the “Best Spoken Word Recording” category. Takei has also acted in many movies. Most recently he reprised his role as “Mr. Sulu” in “Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country,” released in 1991. Takei can still be seen every weekday in the original 1966-69 ‘Star Trek’ series on the Sci-Fi Channel.”He’s such a celebrated person from a television series that definitely opened doors for [television] diversity,” said Missie Kendall, community relations manager of Barnes & Nobel book stores.Takei signed copies of his autobiography, “To the Stars: the autobiography of George Takei, Star Trek’s Mr. Sulu,” at the Barnes & Nobel on Olentangy River Road on Wednesday evening.Takei’s visit is co-sponsored by the Ohio Union Activities Board (OUAB), Asian American Student Services, and Ethnic Students Services. “OUAB is committed to bringing speakers of diverse backgrounds and heritage to campus for the students. Of course, we are pleased to sponsor Takei who is such an accomplished actor,” said Michael Bershadski, chairperson of lectures for OUAB.Takei will be speaking tonight at 7 p.m. in the Ohio Union Ballrooms.
