One of Columbus’ most simpatico rock bands, The Fabulous Johnson Brothers, will be leaving our midst after a free performance tonight at their favorite haunt, Chelsie’s. The Johnson Brothers, as they are popularly called, have been on the Columbus rock scene for about five years now. But like many Columbus bands they have been passed-by by many of the local print and broadcast media bigwigs. Aside from the weekly listing of local gigs in “The Other Paper” and “Columbus Alive,” very few Columbus bands get even a shred of positive press from the local media. Instead, most of the media sources jump on the band wagon of every mega act that breezes through town and tend to ignore some incredible local talent that’s just begging to be heard. So bands like Howlin’ Maggie and the Johnson Brothers develop their own following of fans that believe in their dreams of making it onto a national record label some day. These bands save their pennies, working day jobs, rehearsing in the afternoons and pouring their hearts out through their instruments for a bar full of raving fans one night every weekend. If their lucky they’ll cut an LP with a local record label. But most of these local legends fade in and eventually fade out like a good pair of jeans. We remember them fondly and we miss their comfortable fit. But every now and than one of these bands breaks free from the shackles of the Columbus scene and they soar free into the sunset. The Johnson Brothers will sail out of Columbus on a jetliner bound for L.A. and a better chance to make their dreams come true. We will miss their undeniable energy on stage and their undying love to play their signature funk-soul-rock-ska style of music to a room full of bobbin’, groovin’ fans. Best of luck guys, and “do some damage” on your adventures in L.A. Thanks.
