Sex. Sex. Sex.No matter where we look we are confronted with it every day. That is why there are people out there who care to take the time to make sure that we “do it” safely.Safer sex kits play a key role in the education of sexually active students on campus. During Welcome Week the Ohio State Student Gender and Sexuality Services distributed more than 1,000 kits to students willing to learn the facts of safer sex. Willa Young, head of the service, said the kits contain gloves, condoms (both regular and flavored), lubrication, dental dams and information on how to use these items properly.Young said that information on safer sex tools should extend far beyond just condom information.”A lot of students don’t really know what safer sex things are for, or how to use them,” she said.In addition to tools for safer sex, the kits also carry important information such as the Central Ohio Rape Hotline, facts on safer sex and sexual abuse prevention, Young said.Another group distributing similar kits is the Columbus AIDS Task Force. Catherine Shumate is the director of education and training for the task force. She said the kits her group distributes are for various groups, but mainly targeted toward gay students.”Our kits contain information, condoms and lube,” she said. “In a nutshell, it is current information for gay students, where they can go for counseling.”Shumate’s goal, she said, is to make sure people explore their sexual freedom safely.”With no mom and dad around, students don’t always make wise decisions,” she said. “It is important to hit these college-age students.”Young agreed. “We want to encourage people to have safer sex and try things they haven’t tried before,” she said.Another option for students on campus for promoting safer sex is to join the Condom Club, Young said. The Condom Club is located in the Student Wellness Center and every month students can pay a mere dollar for 10 condoms, she said. The safer sex kits are free, and can be obtained on campus from the Student Wellness Center, or in the offices of Student Gender and Sexuality Services located in the Ohio Union. Students can also get kits from the task force by calling or stopping by their community center.
