WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.- A steady wind of 15 mph blew through Ross-Ade Stadium on Saturday afternoon, chilling the 68,666 fans who witnessed the Purdue Boilermakers knock off the Ohio State Buckeyes, 31-27.However, the cold and continuous gusts were no comparison to the Brees that dominated the game from start to finish. Drew Brees, Purdue’s Heisman Trophy candidate, carved up OSU’s defense better than a prize-winning jack-o’-lantern, throwing for 455 yards and three touchdowns, completing 39 of 65 passes. He shook off an uncharacteristic four interceptions to rally the Boilers back from two fourth-quarter deficits. The win adds another row to Brees’ impressive resume, but it is a row that almost never was. With a little over three minutes left in the game, Brees took the snap and was immediately pressured by OSU linebacker Joe Cooper. Brees tried to throw the ball away, but instead launched a wounded duck into the air that landed in safety Michael Doss’ hands.”It`s terrible because I wasn`t even trying to complete the pass,” said the Big Ten’s career passing leader. “I was trying to throw it away. I went off to the right, and all I was going to do was throw the ball into the ground, but it surprised me that the linebacker came free up the middle.”Doss returned the ball 33 yards to the two-yard line setting up a Jerry Westbrooks touchdown. OSU was up 27-24. Brees walked to the sideline with his head down, but his teammates would not let him dwell on his miscue.”After I threw that pick, (defensive end) Ike Moore came up to me on the sideline with a big old smile on his face,” Brees said. “And he was like, ‘Hey, what`d your mom always tell you? If you break something, fix it.'”He just kept saying it to me, until I said, ‘All right,’ and I smiled,” Brees said. “It’s kind of funny, the thought behind it, but it`s true. I broke it and I guess I tried my best to fix it.”Fix it he did.On Purdue’s second play from scrimmage, after the kickoff, Brees found a wide open Seth Morales for a 64-yard touchdown pass putting the Boilers ahead for good.Morales, a walk-on transfer from Butler, said he was the fourth option on the play.”It wasn’t designed to go to me,” he said. “He looked at Vinny (Sutherland), he looked at (John) Standeford and he looked the other way. Drew is a great quarterback. He happened to see me behind coverage. The ball came my way, I made the catch and I’m just thrilled.”Brees, ever the perfectionist, said he was amazed that the play ended up the way it did.”You know how many times we’ve run that play since I’ve been here in practice and games,” Brees said. “Probably a thousand. You know how many times I’ve thrown it to that guy? One time out of a thousand. And it was during two-a-days, two years ago.”And I remember because you don’t throw that post very often. He’s the fourth guy, and you usually get rid of the ball a lot faster. Another guy opens up a lot.”Morales slipped behind safety Mike Doss, who took the blame for the final touchdown.”Pretty much I blew the coverage,” Doss said. “84 (Morales) made the catch and they won the game.”I knew exactly what I was supposed to do. I never looked back to that side and he just threw it over the top of me. I`ve got to take the blame for that. Our team played a hard game today… big players like Drew Brees made a play for those guys, the guy made the catch and I couldn’t catch him.”
