For those of you who love to watch British TV programs, here’s a chance to catch some of their commercials. The Wexner Center for the Arts will be presenting “The 2000 British Television Advertising Awards and Vision5” tomorrow through Saturday. This is the first time the center is screening the award show, which has existed for 24 years. The purpose of the award is to recognize and feature the most creative and exciting advertisements produced in the United Kingdom during the past year. The Vision5 award category is slightly different, however. Vision5 is a competition of public service announcements sponsored by the English Channel 5. These public service announcements are, for obvious reasons, not as comical as the advertising awards, but they offer very powerful statements. The awards were given in four levels, including the bronze awards, the silver and gold awards and, of course, the award for the best commercial of the year. Viewers will recognize many of the brand name products in the advertisements. They include Häagen Dazs, Nike, Levi’s, Guinness and McDonald’s.There were also different commercials for the same product that received awards in more than one level. An advertisement for a nightclub named Club 18-30 received a bronze and a silver award. These commercials portray a man sneaking out of someone’s bed, only to find out his friend was timing him. The two were practicing for when they will have to sneak out of a stranger’s bedroom after leaving the club with that person. Another of Club 18-30’s commercials show a young girl buying lipstick and asking the saleswoman if it makes her “look cheap.” The saleswoman says no, so the girl asks for a color that will make her look cheap. One of the winners of a silver award includes a commercial for a brand of Levi’s jeans called Sta-Prest. This advertisement features a character very similar to Andy, the naughty, stuffed animal-like creature in the Pizza Hut commercials. This similarity helps to make it easier for a U.S. audience to relate to the commercial. Another of the winners was a less comical advertisement, but one of great meaning. It was an add run by the Forestry Commission that showed a bird that could repeat any sound it heard. Viewers are shown the bird making all sorts of sounds, even that of a car alarm. However, the last sound the bird makes is the noise of a chainsaw. This alludes to the fact that the bird hears trees being cut down in the forest, and the commercial presents a new creative way to remind viewers of deforestation. An advertisement for Malibu Rum won a gold award. The commercial takes place on a bus in Jamaica and explains what life would be like if Jamaicans were as uptight as most other cultures. It portrays unrealistic events such as bike riders complaining about gridlock. The commercial that received the award for best commercial of the year was for Guinness, which shows surfers riding waves, juxtaposed with images of horses running. Most of these commercials were very humorous and give the viewer a glimpse into British humor. Many of the commercials contain dry humor, and tend to be longer than those in the United States. Overall, the film is very amusing and could be an excellent way to relax before exams. The entire production tends to be a bit long, and viewers will have to wait for the punch lines, so this may not be the right film for everyone. However, it will provide a humorous look into another culture, which might just be the distraction people need. Show times are at 7 and 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
