Columbus’ hip hop ambassadors Soul Position return home tonight for a highly anticipated appearance at Little Brother’s.

The group, composed of beatmaker RJD2 and rapper Blueprint, released its first album “8,000,000 Stories” which was the follow-up to last year’s “Unlimited” EP.

“The EP was some fun stuff meant to rock shows, but not really conceptual,” Blueprint said. “The album is a real album, not just a bunch of battle raps or battle beats.”

Both RJD2 and Blueprint have seen success on individual levels. RJD2 with his own album on the prestigously underground Definitive Jux label, as well as in collaborations with a vast number of rising and accomplished stars in the hip hop world. To his credit, Blueprint runs an up and coming label of his own, Weightless Recordings, and has been a part of numerous successful tours, namely with Atmosphere.

And it is with Atmosphere’s frontman Slug, who brought Soul Position to the masses through the Minneapolis-based Rhymesayers records.

“Blueprint reminded me of a friend of mine and I said, ‘Dude I want to put out your records,’ ” Slug said. “Luckily he gave me Soul Position, which I feel very blessed to put out.”

Soul Position blends the best of both of each respective artist. RJD2’s beats, derived from ancient soul singles and other obscure variations, are head-bobbing at times and mournful at others. Blueprint’s lyrics bounce along through light-heared and serious subjects. A laid-back vocal style that isn’t slow, but comforts listeners through its non-confrontational appeal.

The group’s album production is tight through and through, despite being recorded at home. This may be the result of RJD2’s admitted perfectionism.

“I’m difficult,” RJD2 said. “I put Blue through hell. Every group’s like that though, one easy going motherf***** and one who get’s ticked when things go wrong.”

Blueprint said he felt lot of growth within himself in putting “8,00,000 Stories” together.

“Those songs were some of the first solo tracks I’ve ever done,” Blueprint said. “We’ve come a long way and from there, we have a lot of places to go.”

“And we get better every day,” RJD2 said. “The next album will be 20 times better.”

Soul Position’s Columbus homecoming show is at 8 tonight at Little Brother’s. Tickets are available at the door or through Ticketmaster for $15.
