Expensive spas are not an option for most students, but there are simple secrets that can lead to self-pampered bliss.
Homemade options use common refrigerator and pantry items, and can lead to inexpensive treatments for the skin, hair and body.
Skin exfoliation is imperative during the winter months, according to skin care experts. Homemade exfoliates are simple to create and achieve similar results as most store bought items.
“Make your own exfoliate with olive oil and sugar,” said Angie Dodge of Mario Tricoci Salon in Dublin. “After you apply, rinse off in the shower. Then apply lotion.”
To steer clear of chapped lips, mix a teaspoon of lotion with granulated sugar. Spread onto lips in a circular motion and wipe off dead skin cells with a damp cloth.
Another luxury students yearn for but might not be able to afford is a manicure or pedicure.
A self-manicure costs very little and takes about 10 minutes.
Nail salon experts agree that a few easy steps can get a desired polished look. First, massage a moisturizing lotion to hydrate hands. To freshen up nail color, brush on a clear topcoat every couple of days. Always apply two coats of polish for a longer-lasting look.
“Place a drop of olive oil onto cuticles to nourish dry nail beds,” said Brook Umbrell, a skin care specialist at Salon 1400 in Grandview.
Though sandal season is still a few months away, pedicures are the right step toward excellent foot care.
Mix one tablespoon of salt and olive oil, and rub onto feet and calves with a loofah sponge. Apply lotion and wear socks to bed to best soak up moisture. If feet are extremely dry and cracked, soak them in warm olive oil for 20 minutes.
Other household items from the refrigerator can help pull off a quick hair refresher.
“Mayonnaise is a great repairing mask for hair, and egg yolks make hair really shiny. Rub into hair once a month to repair damage,” said Melinda Ruppen, a hair stylist at Mario Tricoci Salon.
According to hgtv.com, a homemade creation made from easy-to-find food items is a great recipe for dry hair.
Combine an egg with a teaspoon of honey and coconut oil, and massage into hair. Leave on for 20 minutes, then rinse and shampoo.
“Professional spa treatments will get excellent results, but if you can’t afford them, use natural products with natural ingredients, Umbrell said. You’ll get the best results every time.”
Take the time to unwind while stuck indoors this season. Being cooped up in a dorm room or apartment can cause stress and irritability, but these self-spa treatments are the cure for those winter blues.
