Senior captain Kim Reeder tied the Ohio State record for shutouts in a season and the Buckeyes defeated the Canisius Golden Griffins 3-0 in the first round of NCAA Regional Softball Tournament at Buckeye Field Thursday.

Reeder recorded her 11th shutout of the season and tied Katie Chain for the single season record. She pitched a complete game three-hitter and struck out eight batters.

The Buckeyes scored three runs in the bottom half of the second inning and played strong defense behind Reeder to get the victory.

Junior second basemen Whitney Cooper singled to left-center field and drove in freshman pinch runner Katie Simonton to make it 1-0 OSU.

Later in the second inning Cooper scored from third on a double steal with junior third basemen Rebecca Schultz and gave OSU a 3-0 lead.

Schultz took off from first and collided with Canisius second basemen Paige Freiberger. The play gave Cooper just enough time to sneak home from third. She finished the day 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Buckeye coach Linda Kalafatis was happy with the result but thought that the team did not have quality at bats as the game progressed.

“I was disappointed in our performance,” she said. “We had that one good inning and thankfully it was enough.”

The three runs proved to be more that enough for Kim Reeder. Reeder shut down the Canisius offense that left 10 runners on base.

She struggled with her control all game hitting a career high five Canisius batters.

“I have just struggled with that inside pitch all season,” said Reeder. “I don’t want to get too much of the plate when it comes to getting ahead in the count.” She was confident after her performance and said she is not worried about the control issues.

The Canisius offense spoiled an impressive start from senior Mallory Aldred. She spread out six hits over six innings and struck out three.

Sophomore pitcher Lindsay Bodeker (16-4) should get the start Friday for the Buckeyes. Kalafatis did not mention who would start game two of the regional and said that all of the pitchers are ready to go at a moments notice.

When asked if Bodeker will start she said it’s a 50-50 chance.

The Buckeyes are 1-0 in the regional and will face BYU at 2:30 p.m. Friday from Buckeye Field. BYU defeated the Kentucky Wildcats 6-2 Thursday in its first game of the regional.

If OSU loses to BYU they will play two games Friday but if they win they will play Saturday for a chance to move on to the NCAA Super Regional.
