A group of Ohio State students and football players battled yesterday on the Oval to find who among them could eat the most hot dogs during the fifth annual Franks for Life.
The event was sponsored by the Schottenstein Chabad House to raise money for the fight against Lou Gherig’s disease.
Zalman Deitsch, rabbi and programing director at the Schottenstein House, said the event has a dual purpose of raising money and informing the public about the disease.
“The reason for the event is that Lou Gherig’s disease does not receive much press from the public forum, and it is a good way to raise money for a worthy cause,” he said.
According to Deitsch all money raised goes to OSU’s research of Lou Gherig’s Disease.
Deitsch also said it is an important time to raise money because of a movement to approve a drug, called myotrophin, to fight the disease.
The winner of the hot dog eating contest was Dori Zafan, who ate seven hot dogs in five minutes.
The contest has featured former football players like Rob Murphy, Joe Montgomery and Stanley Jackson.
