Senior leadership sparked the second half surge necessary to put Northwestern away for good, 59-49 Saturday afternoon.Guard Neshaun Coleman scored 12 of his 16 points after the break, while fellow senior Jason Singleton picked up the slack defensively to help hold Wildcats’ center Evan Eschmeyer to a season-low ten points.”I have been waiting all year to have a game like this,” Coleman said. “I was kind of off in the first half, but I just wanted to stay relaxed and keep shooting.”Coleman was 1 for 7 shooting in the first half, but came back to go 4 for 5 in the second half, including 3 for 4 from three-point range.Coleman said the coaches never discouraged him from shooting.”They always give me the freedom to shoot, as long as I am taking good shots,” he said.Junior point guard Scoonie Penn praised Coleman for his clutch play.”I know Neshaun can shoot,” Penn said. “I have a lot of confidence in him. I love when he is in the game.”Penn also gave credit to Singleton’s defensive effort against Eschmeyer.Singleton helped to fill the void left by Buckeye center Ken Johnson, who sat the bench nearly the entire second half in foul trouble. Singleton, a 6-foot-6 forward, contained the 6-foot-11 Eschmeyer to ten points below his season average.”Jason is a great defender,” Penn said. “He did a great job on Eschmeyer.”Singleton said he and his teammates hounded Eschmeyer into submission.”He is a good player, but we just wore him down with our quickness,” Singleton said. “That was key for us.”Singleton and Coleman will play their last game at home Wednesday night against Wisconsin. After Wednesday’s match-up, the Bucks will face their final regular season game at Penn State.Sophomore guard Michael Redd said the Buckeyes need a strong finish to the regular season.”Our goal is to be a second seed in the Big Ten Tournament,” he said. “But we’re not done yet. We are concentrating on Wisconsin now.”
