The Tony award-winning musical “Avenue Q” will have people in tears as they watch the lives of puppets and humans unravel through comedic songs and script. With witty dialogue, this musical goes beyond any other performance. It creates amusement out of issues such as race, sexual orientation, porn, sex, drinking and even Gary Coleman (the superintendent on Avenue Q). It is Sesame Street for adults. The humor is fantastic and will have the audience laughing non-stop.

Set in the streets of New York City, a recent graduate named Princeton finds a place for rent on Avenue Q. With little money to spare, he searches for his “purpose” in life while making friends with his neighbors, an odd bunch of characters.

There’s Brian, a struggling comedian, and Brian’s fiancé, Christmas Eve. Rod, a Republican investment banker trying to identify his sexual orientation rooms with Nicky, the slacker. Trekkie Monster is addicted to internet porn and Kate Monster is a Kindergarten teaching assistant.

These characters range in age from 23 to 30 and each has his or her own problems, leaving the audience to think that “it sucks to be them.” They all struggle to find jobs, dates and ultimately their purpose in life.

Who would have thought that puppets could be so entertaining? After watching these hand-held characters explore each other’s bodies, obsess over Internet porn and swear left and right, it was definitely amusing. The songs stuck in my head as I left the auditorium, but the one thing I made sure to remember was that “you can be as loud as the hell you want (when you’re making love).”

“Avenue Q” will be performed at 8 p.m. April 8th-13 at the Palace Theater on Broad Street in downtown Columbus. And remember, mature audiences only.
