Barely more than a year old, emerging band A House of Cards is already booking shows at Newport Music Hall and having ex-members of the acclaimed band Bright Eyes open for them.
At a time when the Columbus music scene appears static and few venues have a natural crowd, the band is building an enthusiastic fan base, said Justin Neme, guitar and keyboard player.
“The (fan base) keeps getting bigger and bigger and performances are a lot more energetic and I have been walking away from shows with bleeding fingers,” said Steve Neme, guitarist.
The Neme brothers have been playing instruments since the age of 4, and after Justin had been writing music for a few years, a group of friends from their residence halls decided to start a band.
A House of Cards, based out of Columbus, is comprised of vocalist and megaphone-user John Price, drummer Dan Parker, bass guitarist Bob Ward, the Neme brothers and a Dell Inspiron 6000 computer for ambiance.
Described as “art-pop” on its Web site, and as a more upbeat Radiohead, the band prides itself on having an electric-driven sound mixed with all different layers of instruments.
“I think it is really rare to hear a band as orchestrated as us,” Justin said. “There are a lot of counterparts involved and with all the weaving sounds together, texture and a really different, thick sound is evolved.”
The Neme brothers might disagree on where to draw inspiration from, but they both agree the band’s music produces a mood that has been drawing in fans to fill once empty venues.
“Bands are so cookie-cutter nowadays, but A House of Cards is just so unique and the technicality of the music really draws me to them,” said Jenny Satoran, a senior in marketing.
The band’s melodic sound attracts a wide variety of audiences, Satoran said. A House of Cards has played at venues all over Columbus, including Little Brother’s, Scarlet & Grey Café, The Lodge Bar and Scully’s.
The band will be working on writing and recording a full-length album during the summer, and will continue to play multiple shows per week.
“A guy at one of our shows came up to me and said, ‘you guys have a sound that I have been waiting to hear my entire life,'” Steve said. “And as long as we keep getting that reaction, this is all worth it.”
A House of Cards’ next show in Columbus will be at CBR’s downtown June 10. More information on the band can be found at ahouseofcards.com and myspace.com/ahouseofcards.
