In order for one to get a full understanding of the inspirational drive behind Sunny Day Real Estate’s new album, The Rising Tide, it is necessary to consider many of the famous rock ‘n’ roll cliches which often haunt the industry.SDRE, as they are often referred to, have racked up enough dramatic discourse to rank them with some of the greatest rock soap operas of all time. Although none too serious or detrimental to individual personal life, they are still potent enough to disrupt the band as a whole.SDRE revolves itself around lead singer, Jeremy Enigk whose temperate, ascending vocal chords could make even the most aggressive of guitar riffs into your father’s favorite. While bearing a more indie/alternative rock style, the music has a rhythmic tendency to crawl up inside of you and like most music, control your mood.Having originally formed six years ago in Seattle, the band certainly alluded a style which immensely deviates from their flannel-wearing grunge counterparts, which took over the era and greatly prospered. The ravishing guitar licks played over an acoustic rhythm in songs such as “Rain Song” and “Disappear” are an excellent compliment to the soothing tone of Enigk’s voice. They also make good use of digital sounds and footsteps to create song transition in both “Television” and “Tearing In My Heart.” Likewise, past acoustic/orchestra solo project of Enigk seems to take influence in “Faces of Disguise.” The song begins with an orchestra-like introduction which sets the tone for the song and continues throughout. For the most part, SDRE seems to have a lot to say, as displayed in their excellent lyrics. For instance, in “Fool in the Photograph,” the band seems to express their non-mainstream attitude which was also prevalent in earlier contacts with the media. Much of them seem to be influenced by the likes of the anti-corporate Fugazi, which like SDRE have prospered through more underground routes.Overall, I would say SDRE’s musical talent and understanding are superb, making The Rising Tide a wise choice for anyone’s CD collection.
