As an eccentric farce, “Bulworth” provides laughter and amusement for its audience by ridiculing almost everyone, from the poor black community to the wealthy politicians. It creates awareness of the needs of the underprivileged and the power of the fortunate. Although its humor may be viewed offensively by some, “Bulworth” is intended to make the audience laugh with its exaggerated stereotypes about various classes of society.The initial scenario of the movie precedes the 1996 California primary where Democratic Sen. Jay Bulworth (Warren Beatty) is campaigning for re-election. Then he has a nervous breakdown. Controlled by depression, Bulworth hasn’t eaten or slept for days. He devises a plan that will end his miserable life while providing for his daughter’s future. After purchasing a $10 million life insurance policy, he hires a hoodlum to plan his assassination. But, during his campaign Bulworth meets Nina (Halle Berry), a beautiful black woman who intrigues the Senator. He becomes enticed by her street-wise charm and gradually discovers a new motivation to live.As a stereotypical politician, Bulworth plays the political game by attending to the needs of his highest contributors, the wealthy. He ignores a poor black community after promising them help. His marriage is a false image of love for his voter’s to perceive. Bulworth’s sorrowful eyes reveal his unhappy surrender to life’s problems. After meeting Nina, Bulworth’s life drastically changes. On his road to self-destruction, he discovers a blunt but honest approach to politics. He begins rapping his campaign speeches while ridiculing his audience of prospective voters. Bulworth causes extreme anxiety for his political advisor Murphy (Oliver Platt), an uptight, proper politician who can’t comprehend this new campaign strategy. A new fire is lit in the senator’s eyes when he engages in a carefree night of dancing to hip-hop music with a woman half his age, Nina. Bulworth’s life gains the substance it was lacking when he begins wearing cool clothing and speaking the ‘hood’s dialect. Previously the proper politician, the new carefree Bulworth uses obscenities and insults to convey his recently acquired political standards. Aside from starring in the movie, Beatty was also the producer, the director and the writer of “Bulworth.” He created a believable story about a man who went off the deep-end and was brought back by a new interesting life. It’s a realistic movie that poses society’s problems in a sarcastic manner. With the use of modern dialogue and modern stereotypes, Beatty sends an important message about life’s reality while amusing his audience.Contributing to the effectiveness of the movie, “Bulworth” contains a wide range of musical selections, from contemporary to classical to modern and rap. The music enhances this movie’s success by developing the setting for its characters. “Bulworth” features many artists, including Dr. Dre, Public Enemy, LL Cool J, Ice Cube and composer Ennio Morricane.Aside from its humor, the most note-worthy aspects of “Bulworth” are the controversial stereotypes that it tackles. In one scene he denounces a group of Jewish filmmakers who, according to him, are driven by greed and wealth. Also, Bulworth mocks an aggressive journalist, a temperamental police officer and almost every wealthy person along the way.However, the major flaw in “Bulworth” remains in its conclusion. The entire movie evokes the audience’s sensitivity and hope for its main character. An ironic twist in the conclusion of “Bulworth” leaves the audience hanging for an explanation.Overall, “Bulworth” is an inventive story that provides entertainment as well as making the viewer think about its underlying messages. With an infamous cast of actors and a modern outlook on life, “Bulworth” renders a comedic performance while mocking the conventional image of many groups in society. If not taken too seriously, “Bulworth” is a movie that can make anyone laugh.
